St. Petersburg / Pianist Putin

I stood on the bridge ever the Neva River in St Petersburg, Russia in the frozen sunrise wondering if I would actually get back to the hotel without freezing to death. A man passed by me on the way to work carrying a lunch pail. He didn’t even have gloves on. A young woman jogged by breathing smoke and listening to music. The sun was just above  The Hermitage and other ornate Czarist Russian buildings and the time of day was 10AM Saturday morning. Actually it just looked like sunrise. When the sun did shine (which was only a few hours while we were there) it bathed the city in a golden light – in perpetual twilight – which was beautiful, ancient – almost put you back in time to another era in which life was really cheap and some of the most beautiful structures on earth were built by the incredible wealth of the ones who ruled.

At the Ice Palace where we played that night, security was really tight. President Putin would be in attendance along with other dignitaries and wealthy business men and women.  They were all there to help raise money for children with cancer. It was a noble event. It took the band about two hours to clear security. No chances were taken.

We only played three songs as part of a much larger event. Sharon Stone was there as were Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. Kevin sang with a wild enthusiasm with The Modern Westerners playing with our usual firepower. We hadn’t even gotten warmed up when we stopped. There were a lot of performers who held the stage that night but my favorite part of the show was the little troupe of young ballerinas who danced elegantly together.

President Putin, in a spontaneous act ( I think), got up and played “Blueberry Hill” on the piano. He’s not bad.

Later that night at the hotel, some of the band and crew closed down the bar at 4AM with Kurt and Goldie. Those two were just fabulous.

We all want to go back to magical St. Petersburg…..spend a little time…..walk the streets….see the art…….drink the vodka………..

See You Around……..Sometime

    Dear John and MW,
congratulation on your new website. I like the new look, but my first thought was – Oh God, I hope they kept the archive of news intact. I love your style of writing John, and I browse through your old stories often. They always put a smile on my face.

Thank you for describing St. Petersburg the way you did. It was like you allowed us to accompany you during your short visit of Russia. I hope you get the chance to return to places you liked. You always seem to stay …just for a little while… 🙂

Just three songs? I hope you would not try this innovation with your fans. LOL we would protest for sure, loud and long!
We miss you and we are looking forward to your next tour.

Many greetings to you all 🙂

Premier Putin, these days. Boy this website has gotten really screwed up with the latest changes. I hope it is fixed the next time I visit. Sounds like St. Petersburg is waaaaay farther north than I’ve ever been. Yes, the vodka must be good, the way the Russians reputedly consume the stuff : D Holiday greetings guys!

    Hi John and friends,
it’s Christmas time and I appreaciate very much that you still believe in Santa … or how is it to explain that you as a musician do believe that Putin singing Blueberry Hill was a sponteanous act. It was good but well rehearsed – don’t you think so, too?
Your new website outfit is wonderful. The former one was a little dark – although lit up beautifully by wonderful pictures and (mostly) your statements of what’s going on with the band and the world. I am always looking forward to read of you. Your reports are so well-conceived and appealing very spontaneously at the same time because they contain so much passion for what you are doing and how you respond to the world and its more or less obvious problems – and to us, your fans. I never considered it possible for a band to stay so close to the people, to remain so real and approachable. You are a magnificent band but most of all you are wonderful individuals who I only can appreciate in the highest possible way. Thank you for all the gifts of you we received during this wonderful year. My personal highlight was Berlin March 18th!
I wish you and your families Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Stay well and I hope to see you in Europe in 2011. The sooner the better!!

It must have been really cold in Russia and Slovenia, especially for you that come from the warm Arizona!
But these are other wonderful experiences for you and all the Modern West, music is magical becouse of that, too it can take you all over the World and even give you the taste of an ancient era,as you wrote!congratualations!

Mr Coinman, when I was reading your impressions on staying in St. Petersburg,I just saw everything as I had been there… You have great writing skills. Have you ever thought about writing a book describing KCMW tours and meeting fans? It would be a bestseller number one! Besides, thanks for the music! Modern West is great!

I enjoyed Kevin in the movies and have become a true fan with his music. You cancelled the Sault Ste Marie Michigan concert from Aug 2010, for good reasons but left many disheartened fans in the Canadian twin City across the International Bridge. Come the summer of 2011 and enjoy the fans as well as the great golfing. Realy looking forward to you re-booking the concert, we’re keeping our tickets. Merry Christmas and looking foward to seeing you in the New Year.

It is really wonderful when you share these intimate moments with us…your description of your experiences in Russia give us the feeling we were there in spirit…I truly felt the chill of the air as you were describing it…and the energy of the palace as you played…what an experience it all must have been!!

I’ve downloaded When the Angels Came Down for itunes. It’s a amazing song loved it at the concert in Biloxi in April. Purchase the pre-order of the Deluxe Edition Set. It’s being released on my Birhtday her in the States Feb 8th. Thank you! LOL. Really would like to see a video of When the Angles Came Down. I bet it would make it a #1 song/video if you do. The song brings tears to my eyes everytime I listen to it. Your an excellent song writer. Thank you very much for this song and all the others and the ones to come. Hope all of you have a wonderful Christmas.
