We’re in Bethesda today to play at The Strathmore and we’re really looking forward to it. But we leave behind a wonderful time spent in historic Annapolis playing to sold out crowds at The Ram’s Head. It’s an intimate venue so we played some songs which we ordinarily have not been playing on this tour. The audiences for both nights were wonderful. We’re looking forward to coming back again next year and playing Ram’s Head Live – a bigger sister club in Baltimore.
And speaking of Annapolis…..it has become one of our favorite cities- we last played there in 2008. You can walk around in certain areas and be transported back to the 18th century when The Treaty of Paris was signed at the Maryland State House to end the Revolutionary War. The Maryland State House was, at that time, the capitol of the United States. Many of the neighborhoods in downtown Annapolis are untouched having street after street of architecture from the 1700’s……and as usual I sought out the old graveyards and found St.Anne’s Cemetery founded in 1729….wandered around there for a while amidst the old gravesites and blooming cherry trees on a breezy afternoon.
There was a basketball court across the street from our bus. We played hard. Devin our production manager is a beast on the court. Blair hit shot after shot and Austin, our videographer/graphic designer and court jester hit a lucky half court shot to win 21.
Last time we played the Music Farm in Charleston was March 29, 2008 almost exactly 4 years ago but the same great crowd and the same great crew – friendliest folks around.
The Music Farm was once an old train depot downtown. It was the oldest passenger train depot in the country built in 1857 if I remember correctly…..wood beams so hard you can barely drive a nail into them. You enter through the old passenger loading dock really untouched for a 150 years. Like walking back into history until you hear the music.
If you’ve never been to Charleston you’re missing something very special. For me anyway Charleston has the most perfect blend of the old and the new. The downtown area revitalized, people on the streets, little stores thriving. But just beyond are old quiet neighborhoods streets lined with trees and of course a beautiful graveyard – The Magnolia Cemetery. I got to spend an hour there. Our very nice runner Janna dropped me off and I wandered a bit – spent most of the time in the civil war area where the city recently relocated many confederate soldiers from another cemetery. It’s probably the most beautiful cemetery I’ve ever seen. And as some people know, I’ve been in a lot of them.
We’ve been playing “The Angels Came Down” every night which, in case you’ve never heard it, is a song about the civil war but also is a song about all wars and what we hope happens to the men and women who give their lives for the sake of their country. We’ve also added other new songs – some from our upcoming concept album about the Hatfields and McCoys.
We’re driving through Georgia this morning headed to Charleston. Today is April Fools Day and if I’m not mistaken it’s also Palm Sunday….wonder what that means. I’ve been up for a while and my hands are cold, We keep the bus cold for sleeping and also to ward off any evil spirits. Park just woke up , came in to the front lounge of the bus with his shirt off, so I had to put my cold hands on his back when he wasn’t looking – help him wake up a little bit.
We played in Ft. Pierce, Florida last night at the Sunshine Theater. I really love that name. When the Sunshine Theater was built in 1924 , it was the biggest cultural institution in the state. It became mainly a movie theater later on and then almost disappeared in 1983 when it fell into disrepair. Thankfully it was renovated in the 90’s back to its original state and now brings in touring acts again. The city and the citizens really support it. It was packed last night when KCMW hit the stage. Even though (once again) most people didn’t know that Kevin Costner played in a band and didn’t know what to expect, they warmed up quickly and by the end they were standing up and dancing in their seats. Thank you for a great evening Ft. Pierce!
St. Augustine is the oldest continuingly occupied city in America – founded in 1565 by the Spanish.
What a beautiful city. We have been staying downtown in the historic district. On one side of King Street, as it heads out toward the bay, are old old houses, boutiques, restaurants, bars, graveyards, cigar stores, ice cream stores, sidewalk singers, brick paved streets lined by shade trees, and an ancient fort made of coquina sitting on the edge of the bay still protecting the Spanish Crown……..and tourists everywhere.
On the other side of King Street, when you get beyond The Lightner Musem, is the quiet neighborhood of Lincolnville. Lincolnville is one of the first all African American communities established when the slaves were freed after the Civil War. It also became one of the centers of the civil rights movement in the 1960’s. It was near here that the infamous photo was taken of a motel owner pouring acid into a swimming pool where an African American family was swimming. The photo was published in The New York Times, among other publications, and set off a firestorm of outrage all over the country – helped change the course of American history. All around the 50 beautiful blocks of Lincolnville are signs explaining where important events took place and signs in front of houses of citizens who were leading the movement. Linconville also has some of the grandest oak trees you’ve ever seen along with well-manicured Victorian houses, small family homes with porches and gardens and friendly people.
We started off our spring tour with a great show in Lakeland Florida. Thanks to everyone who turned out and made it such a success. We also learned that KCMW is #11 in the Next Big Sound chart in Billboard this week. This chart monitors the “15 fastest accelerating artists on the internet most likely to become the next big sound”. Pretty cool.
We’re in St. Augustine today and will go to Fort Pearce to play again on Saturday. Then we go on up to Charleston to play a great club – The Music Farm. Keep an eye out during the second week in April. Kevin has been asked to be on a number of TV shows in the days before we go to Ft. Knox for the dedication of a memorial to some fallen soldiers. We’ll tell you more about that later on.
Hello, everyone… Each week leading up to our tour kickoff (3/28), we’ll be posting video updates about what we’re most looking forward to and the latest information. Be sure to keep an eye out for more updates coming soon…
Git ready for the “backcountry feud that became a legend!”
Beginning on Memorial Day, the History Channel will debut the original series Hatfields & McCoys, a three-parter starring Kevin Costner and Bill Paxton. Lots of good-ol-boy garb in this here clip, but them thar men are used to playing rough and ready dudes. (Remember how Costner portrayed the title role in Wyatt Earp and Paxton played an Earp brother in Tombstone?).
A special thank you to everyone who participated in our live chat! We really enjoyed catching up with everyone and answering your questions… Just in case you missed it, we’ve outlined our entire conversation below. Until next time…
